Donnie and I went to college together at Southeast Missouri State University. We were both involved in Greek life there. He was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and I was a member of Gamma Phi Beta. The first time we met was the year that my sorority and his fraternity were paired together for homecoming. We became close friends after this, and I always considered him one of my best "guy" friends. Fast forward a year- Donnie needed a date (last minute) for his senior year fraternity formal. Not thinking anything of it, I agreed to go. I had a few of my sorority sisters going as well, so I thought it would be fun. As the night went on, Donnie and I found ourselves spending a lot of time sitting together laughing and talking instead of dancing and partying with everyone else. I was really starting to feel like he was becoming more than a friend, but I was WAY to afraid to say anything to him because I didn't want to ruin the great friendship that we had. At the end of the night, Donnie shocked me and leaned in for a kiss. I was beyond excited. It was like he read my mind! 6 years later... here we are!
First Date
Lisa: The proposal happened on New Years Eve just as the ball dropped. I had ZERO idea that it was going to happen. In fact, all day I kept bugging Donnie about how I was never going to get engaged. That evening we went to his sister and brother in law’s house just like we do every New Years Eve to celebrate. Donnie started feeling sick, which was very weird. Eventually, we ended up going back home because he felt so bad. I was kind of bummed, but didn't mind because I would still get to spend New Years Eve with him. After a few hours, Donnie insisted that he felt better and that we had to go back. By this time, we had 15 minutes until midnight. We rushed back to his sisters house, and went downstairs with everyone to watch the ball drop. One of his sisters friends suspected something was going to happen, so unknown to me she started to video us. The ball dropped, and Donnie got on one knee. I’ve never been more shocked in my life. I was shaking! I think the first thing I said was, “Are you serious?”. Followed by, “Did you ask my Dad?”. It was so exciting, and I was happy we were able to share the moment with family and friends!
Donnie: I bought a ring in May and was waiting for the right time to ask the question. On New Year’s Eve I thought that would be a good time as we had friends and family present. I called Lisa’s dad to ask permission but wasn’t feeling well. I ended up with a 102 fever and we left for a few hours and started watching Harry Potter. As it got closer to midnight I started feeling better and kept telling Lisa we should go back to the party for the ball drop. So with 15 minutes to midnight we left and went back to the party. I wasn’t sure exactly how I was going to do it. So I waited for the countdown and then went down to one knee and asked. Luckily it was all videotaped.
